Tour Of The Grounds
Theodorus Wijdefeld designed and oversaw the building of the house and the original garden (1909-1911). Almost 15 years later he was hired to design the pergola with the sophisticated hedge and the garage with a dwelling for the chauffeur. The rare monumental outside aspect of this property has been executed by the original architect in a style which is named “turn of 1800”, evoking a natural and seamless flow through the grounds. The main entrance is situated on the side of street to the North and forms a right angle with one of the axis intersections of the house. Above the main entrance of the house, a copper plate hangs with the inscription “Endymion, a thing of beauty is a joy for ever”. This maxim stems from an eponym piece of poetry by John Keats (1795-1821) after which the house is named. Also notice the modern garage with a tarmac access road and sliding door.
